How to Stay Safe During Your Summer Fun

It’s that time of year again, school is out and the beautiful beaches that surround the Seminole area are packed with families, locals and tourists both. But, as a local doctor, we know that all of the fun that comes with the sun also comes with some risks that everyone should be aware of, no matter what your favorite outdoor activity may be!

Sunburn and Heat Related Illnesses

What are the risks? Seminole summers are long, hot, and humid. Sunburn, dehydration, heat stroke, and other heat related illnesses are a serious problem during the summer months that cause many to spend unwanted time at their doctor getting back on their feet. And because the sun’s rays are at its strongest between the hours of 10am and 4pm, it is hard to avoid the heat.

How can they be prevented? The best way to prevent dehydration or any other heat related illness is to drink plenty of clear fluids. When outside make sure to be continuously applying sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30, to avoid sunburn, and always try to wear sunglasses, hats, and other protective clothing items. Take a break in the shade whenever possible, and if you do begin to feel faint, doctors recommend spending some time inside while replenishing your body with clear fluids.

Pool and Beach Safety

What are the risks? Any body of water is a risk, no matter how large or deep. Seminole area beaches can also be home to jellyfish and stingrays, as well as strong currents that can be a threat to even the best of swimmers. Beach signs and warning flags will be posted by lifeguards when possible but it’s important to make sure you’re aware of the area around you.

How can they be prevented? If harmed by jellyfish, stingrays, or any other form of beach life, make sure to see your nearest Seminole doctor immediately. Children should never be swimming or playing around a pool or beach area unsupervised. Any risk of drowning can be prevented. It is a good idea to make sure you are CPR certified or up to date with your certification.

Make sure to start off your pool or beach day prepared. Have a bag packed with clear liquids, snacks, shoes to protect feet from glass and hot surfaces and, of course, sunscreen. Before leaving the house, also double check the weather forecast to make sure no storms are headed your way.

How Can A Family Physician Help Me Lose Weight?

When Seminole residents are trying to lose weight, it’s important to remember a family physician can and should be seen as a valued partner in weight loss plan. Being familiar with your family’s history and with your own personal medical past, your doctor can be the best person to suggest possible means of healthy weight loss that are adapted to your needs. Starting the dialogue with your care provider is the first step to a healthier lifestyle. Together you will be able to:

  • Define Your Goal – People have different body types and obviously have different expectations for that body type. Ask yourself “what should MY target weight be?” You and your doctor can utilize the BMI or Body Mass Index, which compares your height and weight to determine if you are underweight, overweight, or at a healthy weight. Setting a goal is an important part of a successful plan; however it is crucial to set realistic expectations.
  • Deal With Current Medication – Many prescription drugs can and will affect your weight. Certain antidepressants, steroids, and antihistamines can cause you to hold onto water weight. So, when discussing your weight loss plan, with your Seminole family physician, be sure to bring up any medications you are currently taking. Your physician can help you come up with a customized plan that takes these into account.
  • Get Some Extra Help: Your doctor is a valuable resource to use when you need specific assistance or even just a little extra help with your weight loss plan. He has the general knowledge to help you get started, but also know other experts in Seminole he can refer you to for additional help. From meal plans to exercise adapted to you needs, your family physician can provide you with tips to ensure you have a successful experience.
